Exodus 33 Reveals Jesus: The Presence of God, the Glory of the Lord, and the Only Mediator

Exodus 33 It Was Always About Jesus

Jesus Christ as a radiant silhouette of light standing behind a rock at the top of Mount Sinai, covering Moses’ eyes with a glowing hand as unconsuming fire burns beneath His feet, dark storm clouds with lightning above, and the cosmos shining in the night sky.

Exodus 33 feels personal. After the golden calf rebellion in Exodus 32, God tells Israel He will not go up among them. The people are stiff-necked. Sin has created separation.

But this chapter is not ultimately about Israel’s failure.

It is about the need for a Mediator — and that Mediator is Jesus Christ.

The Tent of Meeting: A Foreshadow of Christ

Moses sets up the Tent of Meeting outside the camp. Whoever sought the Lord had to go outside to meet Him.

This is powerful symbolism.

Jesus would later suffer outside the camp (Hebrews 13:12). Separation because of sin required a meeting place — and Christ Himself becomes that meeting place between God and man.

“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14).

The Greek word for “dwelt” means “tabernacled.” The Tent in Exodus 33 whispers the name of Jesus.

Face to Face — Yet Not Fully

Exodus 33:11 says the Lord spoke to Moses “face to face, as a man speaks to his friend.” Yet later God says, “You cannot see My face, for no man shall see Me and live.”

How do we reconcile this?

Moses experienced intimacy — but not the fullness of God’s unveiled glory.

That fullness comes in Christ.

Jesus says in John 14:9:

“He who has seen Me has seen the Father.”

Moses saw partial glory.
We see the full revelation of God in Jesus.

The True Intercessor

Moses intercedes:

“If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.” (Exodus 33:15)

This is the cry of a mediator.

But Moses could only plead.

Jesus secures.

Moses asks for grace.
Jesus is grace (John 1:17).

Moses asks for God’s presence.
Jesus is called Immanuel — “God with us.”

Moses stands between God and the people temporarily.
Jesus stands eternally as our High Priest.

“Show Me Your Glory”

Moses makes a bold request:

“Please, show me Your glory.” (Exodus 33:18)

God hides him in the cleft of the rock and covers him with His hand as His glory passes by.

The Rock in Scripture consistently symbolizes Christ (1 Corinthians 10:4). Protection from divine holiness comes only by being hidden in Him.

God’s hand covering Moses reveals mercy.

At the cross, that mercy is fully displayed.

In Exodus 33, glory passes by.
In Jesus, glory dwells among us.

Why Exodus 33 Is All About Jesus

• The Tent of Meeting → Jesus, our dwelling place with God
• The Mediator → Jesus, our eternal High Priest
• The Rock → Christ, our refuge
• The Glory → Fully revealed in the Son
• The Presence → The Holy Spirit given after Christ’s ascension

What Moses longed to see…
We now see in Christ.

Exodus 33 is not about distance from God.

It is about how God makes a way to come near — through Jesus.

If this opened your eyes to Jesus in Exodus, don’t stop here. Revisit Exodus 31 (the Spirit-filled craftsman pointing to the Spirit of Christ), Exodus 32 (the need for a perfect intercessor), and watch the story unfold toward the cross.

Have you found Jesus among His verses?
