Exodus 36 Reveals Jesus: Overflowing Generosity, the True Tabernacle, and God Dwelling With Us
Exodus 36: When Grace Overflows
It is what happens when hearts transformed by mercy respond with abundance.
After the call to give in Exodus 35, something unexpected happens:
The people bring more than enough.
Moses actually has to command them to stop giving.
That is revival.
And it all points to Jesus.
Grace Produces Overflow
Israel had just failed in Exodus 32.
They had just witnessed covenant renewal in Exodus 34.
Now in Exodus 36, generosity overflows.
Why?
Because mercy changes people.
Under law alone, people resist.
Under grace, people respond.
In the New Testament, Paul says:
“Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift.”
The greatest gift is Christ Himself.
And when hearts grasp that gift, generosity becomes natural.
Exodus 36 shows a community moved by grace — a shadow of what the Church would become after Christ pours out His Spirit.
The Skilled Work — Built Exactly as Commanded
The chapter repeatedly says they made everything “as the Lord had commanded Moses.”
Obedience matters.
But notice something deeper:
The Tabernacle is being formed piece by piece — curtains, coverings, frames, veil.
Layer upon layer.
This structure is not random.
It is a dwelling place for God.
John 1:14 says:
“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
The Greek word for “dwelt” means “tabernacled.”
The physical Tabernacle in Exodus 36 is a blueprint of a greater reality.
Jesus is the true Tabernacle.
The outer curtains separated people from glory.
In Christ, the veil is torn.
The structure in Exodus required craftsmanship.
The body of Christ was “prepared” (Hebrews 10:5).
Even the layered coverings symbolize something powerful:
-
Inner fine linen → purity
-
Protective coverings → separation from corruption
Jesus embodies both — perfect holiness and protective righteousness covering believers.
More Than Enough
This may be one of the most beautiful gospel echoes in Exodus.
The people bring so much that the workmen say:
“The people bring much more than enough.”
More than enough.
At the cross, Jesus did not provide barely enough grace.
He provided abundance.
Romans 5 says where sin increased, grace abounded much more.
Exodus 36 whispers that redemption does not run dry.
The Tabernacle is built from overflow.
The Church is built from the overflow of Christ’s finished work.
Why Exodus 36 Is All About Jesus
• Overflowing generosity → Grace produces willing obedience
• The Tabernacle → Jesus, God dwelling among us
• Exact obedience → Christ perfectly fulfilling the Law
• More than enough → The abundance of redemption
Exodus 32 showed brokenness.
Exodus 33 showed longing for presence.
Exodus 34 revealed God’s merciful name.
Exodus 35 stirred willing hearts.
Exodus 36 shows what happens when grace takes root.
God gets His dwelling place.
And that dwelling place ultimately is not a tent in the wilderness.
It is Jesus Christ — and through Him, a Spirit-filled people.
The same Lord who filled the wilderness with His presence now fills believers through His Spirit.
Grace still overflows.
Have you experienced the “more than enough” mercy of Christ?
Have you found Jesus among His verses?
