Jacob’s journey in Genesis 35 is more than a physical return to Bethel—it is a spiritual return to God. After years of struggle, deceit, and family tension, Jacob obeys God’s command, purifying his household, burying foreign gods, and building an altar at Bethel. Each of these actions points us toward Christ, the ultimate fulfillment of God’s promises.

When Jacob calls his family to “purify themselves” (Genesis 35:2), we see a foreshadowing of the cleansing power of Jesus Christ. Just as Jacob prepares his household to meet God, Christ purifies our hearts so we may stand holy before the Father. Every altar Jacob builds echoes the ultimate sacrifice Jesus would make for humanity, bridging the covenant promises of the Old Testament with their fulfillment in the New.
