Joshua 2 Explained: Rahab and the Scarlet Cord | Jesus Revealed in Salvation

Joshua 2 — The Scarlet Cord That Points to Jesus

Ancient Jericho stone house with a second-floor window and a scarlet red rope hanging down, viewed from a low angle under a bright blue sky, with a glowing silhouette of Jesus in the clouds symbolizing salvation through His blood
Joshua 2 introduces one of the most unexpected heroes in Scripture—Rahab, a woman from Jericho whose faith would echo all the way into the New Testament. But this chapter is far more than a spy mission… it’s a powerful revelation of Jesus Christ and salvation by faith.

Spies Sent Into the Land — Faith Moves Forward

After the command in Joshua 1 to be strong and courageous, Joshua immediately takes action, sending two spies into Jericho.

This connects back to the promise first given in earlier books like Genesis 12, when God told Abraham his descendants would inherit the land, and continues through Deuteronomy 34, where Moses saw it but could not enter.

But here’s the deeper truth:

  • The mission wasn’t just about land
  • It was about God preparing hearts before conquest

Even in enemy territory… God already had someone ready.

Rahab — A Picture of Grace

Rahab, a prostitute in Jericho, hides the spies and declares something shocking:

“The Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.” (Joshua 2:11)

This moment is powerful:

  • She is a Gentile
  • She is an outsider
  • Yet she shows greater faith than many in Israel

This directly points to the New Testament:

👉 Jesus came not just for Israel, but for all who believe

Rahab later appears in the genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:5), showing:

  • God redeems anyone
  • No past disqualifies you from His purpose

The Scarlet Cord — A Direct Symbol of Jesus

Rahab is given a simple instruction:

Tie a scarlet cord in your window, and you and your household will be saved.

This is one of the clearest Old Testament symbols of Christ.

Symbolism Breakdown:

  • Scarlet (red) → Represents the blood of Jesus
  • The cord in the window → A visible sign of faith
  • Protection from judgment → Just like the blood of the lamb in Exodus 12 (Passover)

Just as the Israelites were saved by the blood on their doorposts…

👉 Rahab is saved by the scarlet cord
👉 We are saved by the blood of Jesus Christ

This is not coincidence—it’s divine design.

Faith That Acts

Rahab didn’t just believe—she acted:

  • She hid the spies
  • She risked her life
  • She obeyed the instruction

This reflects a core New Testament truth:

  • Faith without action is dead (James 2:25 even mentions Rahab directly)

Her faith wasn’t perfect—but it was real

God Saves Households

Rahab’s entire family is saved through her faith.

This shows:

  • God’s mercy extends beyond the individual
  • Faith can impact generations

This echoes throughout Scripture:

  • Noah’s family saved in the ark
  • The jailer’s household saved in Acts 16

God is not just a personal Savior—He is a generational Redeemer

Jesus Revealed in Joshua 2

This chapter is filled with powerful glimpses of Christ:

  • Rahab the outsider → salvation for all nations
  • Scarlet cord → the blood of Jesus
  • Rescue from destruction → salvation from judgment
  • Faith that saves → grace through belief, not status

Even in a city marked for destruction…
God made a way for salvation.

Final Reflection

Joshua 2 reminds us that no one is too far gone.

Rahab lived in a city destined for judgment—but through faith, she was rescued, redeemed, and brought into the story of Jesus Himself.

The same is true today:

  • Your past doesn’t define you
  • Your faith does

The scarlet cord still speaks…

And it still saves.

Call to Action

If this message spoke to you:

👉 Go back and read Joshua 1 to see how God prepared the way
👉 Revisit Exodus 12 and see the connection of the blood covering
👉 Reflect on how God may be calling you to step out in faith

Don’t just hear the Word—act on it.

Have you found Jesus among His verses?
