Numbers 15: The Command to Remember, and the Christ It Points To
God begins by describing various offerings that Israel must present when they enter the Promised Land. Even after the people's rebellion, God still speaks about their future in the land. This is remarkable. Though judgment came upon the generation that doubted, God's promise itself did not fail.
This shows a pattern seen throughout Scripture: human failure does not cancel God's plan.
And ultimately, that plan reaches its fulfillment through Jesus Christ.
The sacrifices described in this chapter—burnt offerings, grain offerings, and drink offerings—were part of Israel's worship system. Yet these sacrifices were never meant to be permanent solutions. They pointed forward to the perfect sacrifice that would come later.
In the New Testament, Christ becomes the final offering, accomplishing what repeated sacrifices could never fully achieve.
Another striking moment appears later in the chapter when a man is caught gathering sticks on the Sabbath and receives judgment. This moment emphasizes the seriousness of God's holiness under the law. Yet it also highlights why humanity ultimately needed grace beyond the law—grace fulfilled through Christ.
But the most memorable command in Numbers 15 comes at the end of the chapter.
God instructs Israel to place tassels on the corners of their garments, with a blue cord woven into them. Every time the people saw these tassels, they were meant to remember God's commandments and remain faithful.
The color blue often symbolized heaven and divine authority in biblical imagery. The tassels therefore became a visible reminder that God's people were called to live according to His heavenly standards.
Centuries later, these same tassels appear again in the New Testament. People seeking healing reached out to touch the fringe of the garment worn by Jesus Christ.
In that moment, the symbol established in Numbers becomes something extraordinary.
The reminder of the law becomes the place where grace and healing are found.
What was once a sign to remember God's commands now touches the One who perfectly fulfilled them.

Symbolism in Numbers 15
Several symbols in this chapter carry deeper meaning:
-
Sacrifices → foreshadow the ultimate sacrifice of Christ
-
Blue cord in the tassels → reminder of God's heavenly authority
-
Garment fringes → later touched in faith during Jesus’ ministry
-
Repeated offerings → reveal humanity’s need for a perfect and final atonement
These images quietly prepare the reader for the arrival of the One who fulfills the law completely.
Final Reflection
Numbers 15 reminds Israel to remember God's commands, but it also reveals a deeper truth.
Human beings struggle to keep the law perfectly.
That is why Scripture ultimately points to Jesus Christ, the One who fulfills the law, becomes the final sacrifice, and offers the grace that the law alone could never provide.
The tassels reminded Israel to remember God's word.
But today, believers remember something even greater—the finished work of Christ.
