Exodus 4 Explained: The Signs of Moses and the Glory of Jesus Christ Revealed

📖 Exodus 4: The Reluctant Deliverer and the Greater Christ

Collage of Exodus 4 showing a leprous hand, Moses’ staff turned serpent casting a cross-shaped shadow, the Nile River turned red like blood, pyramids under a cosmic sky, Aaron standing behind Moses in ancient clothing, and a small image of Jesus on the cross in the background symbolizing Christ fulfillment.
Exodus 4 is not about Moses’ weakness.
It is about Christ’s sufficiency.
In Exodus 3,God revealed His divine name — I AM.
Now in Exodus 4, Moses hesitates.
“What if they don’t believe me?”
It’s the cry of every human heart called by God.

But watch carefully — because every sign given to Moses whispers the name of Jesus.

The Staff That Becomes a Serpent

God tells Moses to throw down his staff.

It becomes a serpent.

Then God commands him to grab it by the tail — and it becomes a staff again.

This is more than a miracle.

The serpent represents authority and power in Egypt.
God shows that His authority swallows Egypt’s authority.

But deeper still — it foreshadows Christ.

At the cross, Jesus would confront the ancient serpent.
He would allow Himself to be lifted up — just like the bronze serpent later in the wilderness — and through that lifting, crush the enemy.

The staff becomes a weapon of judgment.

The cross becomes the instrument of victory.

The Leprous Hand

Moses’ hand becomes leprous — white as snow — and then instantly healed.

Leprosy in Scripture represents corruption and uncleanness.

The sign reveals something profound:

Humanity is infected.

Only God can cleanse.

Jesus would later touch lepers — and instead of becoming unclean, He would make them clean.

Moses’ hand was restored temporarily.

Christ restores permanently.

Water Turned to Blood

God warns that Nile water will become blood.

This anticipates the coming plagues — but it also anticipates something greater.

Blood will be required for deliverance.

Egypt will learn it.

Israel will learn it at Passover.

The world will learn it at Calvary.

Exodus 4 introduces the necessity of blood.

Jesus fulfills it completely.

The Reluctant Servant and the Perfect Son

Moses hesitates repeatedly:

“I am not eloquent.”

“Please send someone else.”

Contrast that with Jesus.

Where Moses stammers, Christ speaks with authority.
Where Moses resists, Christ says, “Here I am.”
Where Moses needs Aaron, Jesus stands alone.

Moses is a shadow.

Jesus is the substance.

The Mysterious Passage (Exodus 4:24–26)

God seeks to kill Moses because of covenant disobedience.

Why?

Because deliverance requires covenant faithfulness.

This moment reminds us:

God’s salvation is serious.

Sin cannot be ignored.

The covenant must be honored.

Ultimately, Jesus becomes the One who perfectly fulfills the covenant — so that judgment passes over us.

Even this strange passage prepares us for Christ.

Christ Hidden in Exodus 4

Moses is called God’s son in relation to Israel.
But Jesus is the true and eternal Son.

Moses performs signs.
Jesus is the sign.

Moses carries God’s name.
Jesus is the I AM.

If Exodus 1 revealed the need for a deliverer…
If Exodus 2 showed a hidden savior…
If Exodus 3 revealed the Great I AM…

Exodus 4 shows us that the mission of salvation depends not on human ability — but on divine power.

And that power is ultimately revealed in Jesus Christ.

✨ Final Reflection

Exodus 4 exposes human weakness.

But it magnifies divine glory.

God does not need a perfect messenger.

He provides a perfect Savior.

Every sign.
Every hesitation.
Every confrontation.

All of it points forward to the greater Deliverer.

The One who would not hesitate.

The One who would not fail.

The One who would stretch out His hands — not with leprosy, but with nail scars.

And through those scars, cleanse the world.
