Exodus 2 Explained: How God Hid the Deliverer Who Points to Jesus Christ

How God Hid the Deliverer Who Points to Jesus Christ

Baby Moses floats in a basket on the Nile at night as Jesus appears above as a radiant silhouette of light, guiding and protecting him, with pyramids, distant fires, and a star-filled cosmic sky symbolizing divine deliverance in Exodus 2.

Exodus 2 — The Deliverer Hidden Before He Is Revealed

Exodus 2 opens with a child who should have died.

Pharaoh’s decree demanded death—but God’s plan demanded life. A baby is hidden, placed in a basket, and sent into the waters. What looks like desperation is actually divine design.

This is not only Moses’ story.
It is Jesus’ shadow.

Just as Moses is rescued from a death order in Exodus 1, Jesus is preserved from Herod’s massacre. God protects His deliverers before the world even knows they exist.

The basket Moses floats in is sealed with pitch—the same word used to describe Noah’s ark. Once again, salvation passes through water, pointing forward to Christ, who would later declare Himself the only true refuge from judgment.

Raised in Pharaoh’s house, Moses grows up between two identities—Hebrew by birth, Egyptian by upbringing. Jesus, too, would live between heaven and earth, fully God yet dwelling among men.

When Moses kills an Egyptian, his calling is exposed too early. He flees into the wilderness. The deliverer is not ready yet.

And neither was the world ready for Jesus—who would also retreat into the wilderness before beginning His ministry.

God does not rush redemption.

While Moses waits in Midian, Israel groans under slavery. Scripture says their cries rise to God—and He remembers His covenant.

That covenant began in Genesis 12, was preserved through Joseph in Genesis 50, and now moves closer to fulfillment—not through power, but through waiting.

Exodus 2 ends without deliverance… but with promise.

God has heard.
God has seen.
God is about to reveal the true Redeemer.

And that Redeemer is Jesus Christ.

Before Jesus was revealed, He was protected.
Before salvation was seen, it was prepared.
