Exodus 11 Explained: Jesus Christ Revealed as the Coming Passover Lamb

Exodus 11 is the final warning before the night that changed history

Thousands of bassinets with sleeping babies spread across a desert near the pyramids and Nile River at night, a slain lamb on an altar with Jesus Christ silhouetted on the cross above, and Pharaoh in anger under a star-filled sky symbolizing Exodus and the Passover fulfilled in Christ.

It is not merely about the death of the firstborn.

It is about Jesus Christ — the Lamb who would stand in the place of judgment.

The tension that has been building since Book of Exodus 7 now reaches its breaking point.

The Final Blow Announced

God declares that one more plague will fall upon Egypt.

At midnight, judgment will strike every firstborn in the land — from Pharaoh’s house to the lowest servant.

Why the firstborn?

Because the firstborn represented inheritance, future, strength, and glory.

This is not random.

It is judicial.

Back in Exodus 1, Pharaoh tried to destroy Israel’s sons.
In Exodus 4, God declared, “Israel is My firstborn son.”
Now in Exodus 11, the cost of rebellion comes due.

Judgment is measured.
Judgment is righteous.
Judgment is personal.

And yet — mercy is already being prepared.

The Shadow of a Greater Son

Exodus 11 prepares us for what comes next in Exodus 12 — the Passover.

But here is the deeper truth:

Every firstborn in Egypt deserved to die.

Every firstborn in Israel deserved to die.

The difference would not be ethnicity.

The difference would be blood.

This chapter points directly to Jesus Christ — the true Firstborn, the eternal Son, who would die so others could live.

Where Egypt loses its sons in judgment, God would later give His Son in redemption.

The plague of death whispers the Gospel.

The Fear of the Lord Falls

Moses leaves Pharaoh in burning anger.

Pharaoh’s heart is fully hardened.

We saw resistance in Exodus 7, compromise in Exodus 8, false repentance in Exodus 9, and spiritual blindness in Exodus 10.

Now there is only silence before midnight.

Exodus 11 is the calm before the Lamb.

It forces the reader to feel the weight of what is coming.

Justice is not delayed forever.

But neither is mercy.

Christ in Exodus 11

Exodus 11 reveals Jesus as:

  • The true Firstborn Son

  • The One who absorbs judgment

  • The fulfillment of the coming Passover

  • The answer to divine justice

  • The glory that outshines Pharaoh’s throne

Pharaoh thought he was divine.

But a greater Son was coming.

Not to harden hearts.

But to save them.

The Midnight Question

Midnight is approaching.

A cry will rise in Egypt unlike any before it.

But in the houses covered by blood, there will be peace.

Exodus 11 prepares us for the central truth of Scripture:

Either judgment falls on you —
Or it falls on a substitute.

Jesus is that substitute.

He is the Son who dies so firstborn sons can live.

Final Reflection

Exodus 11 asks one question:

When judgment comes, what covers you?

Religion cannot save you.
Heritage cannot save you.
Power cannot save you.

Only the Lamb can.

The story is building toward redemption.

And redemption has a name — Jesus Christ.

If this helped you see Jesus in Exodus 11, share it with someone who needs to understand the power of the coming Lamb.

Have you found Jesus among His verses?
