Exodus 24 Explained: The Covenant, the Blood, and the Glory of Jesus Christ

Exodus 24: The Covenant Meal That Reveals Jesus Christ

Christ depicted as radiant light on a heavenly throne atop Mount Sinai with stairs made of ruby, sapphire, onyx, jasper, and other precious stones. Eighty men prostrate before Him in worship, while Moses pours wine on the Ark of the Covenant on the right. A sacred meal is set under a tent in the foreground, with mountains and misty desert in the background, illustrating the covenant of Exodus 24 fulfilled in Christ.

Exodus 24 is not just a covenant ceremony. It is a prophetic preview of Christ.

After the justice laws of Exodus 22 and the promise of the Angel in Exodus 23, God now confirms His covenant with Israel. But the way He does it reveals something much greater.

1. The Blood of the Covenant (Exodus 24:8)

Moses sprinkles blood on the altar and on the people and declares:

“Behold the blood of the covenant…”

This moment echoes forward to Jesus at the Last Supper when He says,

“This is My blood of the covenant.”

The blood in Exodus covered temporarily.
The blood of Jesus cleanses eternally.

The altar represents God.
The people represent humanity.
The blood unites both.

This is the Gospel hidden in shadow.

2. The Seventy Elders See God

Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy elders go up the mountain and see the God of Israel. Under His feet is something like a pavement of sapphire stone—clear as the sky.

The sapphire clarity reflects heavenly purity. Blue throughout Scripture often symbolizes divine revelation and heavenly authority.

And what do they do?

They eat and drink in His presence.

A covenant meal.

This foreshadows:

  • The Lord’s Supper

  • The Marriage Supper of the Lamb

  • Fellowship restored through Christ

You cannot miss this — sinful men eating peacefully in the presence of a holy God only happens because blood was applied first.

That points directly to Jesus.

3. The Cloud and the Glory

Moses enters the cloud.

The glory of the Lord rests on Mount Sinai for six days, and on the seventh day God calls to Moses from the midst of the cloud.

Six days — humanity’s labor.
The seventh — divine completion.

The pattern of creation appears again.

The cloud represents:

  • The Father’s glory

  • The Holy Spirit’s covering presence

  • Divine mystery and holiness

Later, that same glory fills the Tabernacle.
Later still, it dwells bodily in Christ.

Jesus is not separate from this glory.

He is the glory made visible.

Exodus 24 Fulfilled in Christ

Exodus 24 shows us:

  • A covenant sealed with blood

  • A mediator ascending the mountain

  • A divine meal in God’s presence

  • Glory resting in a cloud

Jesus fulfills every one of these:

  • He is the better blood.

  • He is the greater Mediator.

  • He invites us to the eternal covenant meal.

  • He is the visible glory of God.

Sinai trembled with fire.

Calvary trembled with redemption.

One revealed the law.
The other fulfilled it.

Exodus 24 asks a quiet but powerful question:

Have you entered the covenant through the blood?

The elders could not approach without sacrifice. Neither can we. But Jesus has already shed the blood. The way is open.

The cloud that once concealed glory has now been torn open through Christ. The mountain that once burned with fire now invites us boldly to the throne of grace.

Do not just read Exodus.
See Jesus in it.
