Exodus 23 Explained: The Angel of the Lord and the Hidden Revelation of Jesus Christ
📖 Exodus 23: The Angel Who Bears God’s Name
Exodus 23 is not just law — it is revelation.
After justice is outlined in Exodus 22, God now speaks of something greater: His Presence going before His people.
“Behold, I send an Angel before you… My Name is in Him.” (Exodus 23:20–21)
This is not an ordinary angel.
In Scripture, to bear the “Name” of the Father means to carry His authority, essence, and identity. No created angel forgives sins. Yet this Angel has authority to pardon or not pardon transgression. That authority belongs to God alone.
This is one of the clearest Old Testament glimpses of Christ before Bethlehem.
The same pattern appears earlier:
-
In Exodus 12, the blood of the lamb saves.
-
In Exodus 14, the Deliverer parts the sea.
-
In Exodus 19, the holy presence descends in fire.
-
Now in Exodus 23, the Divine Messenger leads them into promise.
The Father sends.
The Angel goes before.
The people must obey.
This mirrors the New Testament:
The Father sends the Son.
The Son reveals the Father’s Name (John 17:6).
The Spirit leads believers into truth (John 16:13).
Exodus 23 also commands justice, mercy toward enemies, and Sabbath rest for the land. Even the land must rest in cycles — echoing creation itself. Rest is woven into redemption. Yet Israel will struggle to enter true rest.
Hebrews later reveals that ultimate rest is found in Christ.
Then comes the promise of victory:
“I will send My fear before you… I will drive them out.”
Notice something powerful — God says He will not remove enemies in one year, but little by little (Exodus 23:29–30).
Sanctification works the same way.
Christ saves instantly.
But He transforms progressively.
Victory unfolds in stages.
The Angel goes before them into battle. Just as Christ goes before us in death and resurrection.
Exodus 23 is not merely instruction.
It is assurance:
God does not send His people alone.
He sends His Presence.
And that Presence has a Name.
Jesus.
The Angel who bore the Father’s Name walked before Israel. Today, the Name above every name walks before us.
Exodus 23 is not just about guidance — it is about the One who carries divine authority, forgives sin, and leads us into promise.
