Joshua 17: More Than Land — Jesus, Our Bold Inheritance
Joshua 17 — A Chapter That Points Straight to Jesus
At first glance, Joshua 17 continues the division of land—but look closer, and you’ll see something powerful:👉 This chapter is about access, bold faith, and claiming what God has promised.
And every one of those themes points directly to Jesus Christ.
The Daughters of Zelophehad — Access Granted Through Christ
Early in the chapter, something unexpected happens:
The daughters of Zelophehad come forward to claim their inheritance.
In ancient times, this was radical.
But Moses had already received instruction from God (Numbers 27) to honor their request—and now in Joshua 17, that promise is fulfilled.
Why this matters:
➡️ They were granted access to inheritance
➡️ Not by tradition—but by God’s word
Now connect that to Jesus:
- In Christ, we receive access we didn’t earn
- We are brought near, even when culture or law would exclude us
- We become heirs of God
This moment foreshadows what Jesus would do:
👉 Breaking barriers
👉 Restoring identity
👉 Granting inheritance to all who believe
Just like we saw promises unfold in Joshua 16, here we see that God never forgets what He speaks—and Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of every promise.
Manasseh’s Portion — God’s Blessing Requires Faith to Possess
The tribe of Manasseh receives their portion, but there’s a problem:
They don’t fully drive out the inhabitants of the land.
Sound familiar?
This pattern echoes Joshua 15–16:
- Promise given
- Land assigned
- But obedience incomplete
The deeper truth:
➡️ God gives the promise
➡️ But we must step into it by faith
Now look at Jesus:
- He has already secured the victory
- But we must walk in it daily
This is the tension of the Christian life:
👉 Victory is finished in Christ
👉 But growth requires surrender and action
“The Hill Country Is Not Enough” — A Lack of Vision
The children of Joseph complain:
“Why have we only received one portion?”
They saw limitation where God had already provided abundance.
Joshua responds with something powerful:
👉 Go up.
👉 Clear the land.
👉 Take what is yours.
This is a word for today:
Sometimes we ask God for more…
When He’s already given enough—but requires us to move in faith.
Iron Chariots — Fear vs Faith
The people hesitate because the enemy has iron chariots.
In their eyes:
- The enemy looks stronger
- The task looks harder
But here’s the truth:
➡️ God already gave them the land
Now bring this to Jesus:
- The cross already defeated sin
- The resurrection already secured victory
So what are “iron chariots” today?
- Fear
- Doubt
- Habitual sin
- Comfort zones
And Jesus says:
👉 “Go up anyway.”
Christology in Joshua 17 — Jesus Revealed
This chapter reveals Jesus in powerful ways:
- Daughters receiving inheritance → Access through Christ
- Unclaimed land → Untapped spiritual promise
- Complaint of limitation → Human doubt vs divine provision
- Iron chariots → Obstacles already defeated by Jesus
This connects directly to the New Testament:
👉 “We are heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ…” (Romans 8:17)
Symbolism to Notice
- Inheritance → Eternal life through Jesus
- Land not fully taken → Areas of life not surrendered to Christ
- Going up to possess → Walking in faith, not sight
- Iron chariots → Illusions of power compared to God’s authority
Final Reflection
Joshua 17 isn’t about land—it’s about faith in what God already gave.
The people hesitated…
But Jesus didn’t.
He fully completed what we never could.
So the real question is:
👉 Will you step into what’s already yours in Christ?
