David's Lament and the King Who Mourns for His Enemies The book of 2 Samuel begins in the shadow of tragedy. Saul, Israel's first king, is dead. Jonathan, David's beloved friend, is dead. Israel has suffered a devastating defeat against the Philistines. Yet instead of celebrating the removal of the man who hunted him for years, David responds with grief, tears, fasting, and one of the most moving laments in all of Scripture.
