Finding Jesus in the Old Testament

The Old Testament is more than a collection of ancient stories, laws, poems, and prophecies. From Genesis to Malachi, it tells one unfolding story of God's plan to redeem humanity—and that story ultimately leads us to Jesus Christ.

This page is a guide to exploring the Old Testament through a Christ-centered lens. The books are organized into five major sections: The Law, History, Wisdom & Poetry, Major Prophets, and Minor Prophets. Each section reveals another part of the story that points toward Christ.

In The Law, we discover the foundations of God's covenant, the problem of sin, sacrifice, Passover, priesthood, atonement, and God's promise of redemption. These themes establish patterns that find their ultimate fulfillment in Jesus.

In the Historical Books, we follow Israel's journey through judges, kings, victories, failures, exile, and restoration. Along the way, we encounter promises concerning David's throne, God's chosen King, redemption, and the coming Messiah.

In Wisdom & Poetry, we encounter the human heart crying out to God through suffering, worship, wisdom, love, and the search for meaning. The Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon contain themes and passages that point us toward the character, mission, suffering, kingship, and glory of Christ.

In the Major Prophets, God's message becomes even clearer. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel speak of judgment, restoration, a coming King, a suffering servant, a new covenant, God's kingdom, and the ultimate victory of God's chosen Messiah.

In the Minor Prophets, twelve shorter prophetic books continue the same story. They speak of sin and repentance, judgment and restoration, the coming Day of the Lord, the Messiah, God's kingdom, and the hope of salvation.

Our goal is not to force Jesus into passages where He is not present. Instead, we will follow the patterns, promises, prophecies, covenants, symbols, people, sacrifices, and themes that the New Testament reveals as ultimately pointing toward Christ.

The Old Testament begins with creation and the fall of humanity. It continues through covenant, sacrifice, kingship, prophecy, judgment, and hope. And throughout the journey, we are being prepared for the One who would fulfill it all.

Jesus said that the Scriptures testify about Him. This is the journey of discovering where those signs lead.
