1 Samuel 10 Explained: Saul Anointed as King and the Hidden Revelation of Jesus Christ
The Anointing of a King… and the Revelation of the True King, Jesus Christ
A King Is Chosen… But God Reveals Something Greater
In 1 Samuel 9, God sovereignly led Saul to Samuel, showing that even the search for lost donkeys was divine direction. Now in 1 Samuel 10, the moment arrives—Saul is anointed as king over Israel. But beneath the surface, this chapter is not just about Saul… it’s about Jesus—the true Anointed King.
Samuel Anoints Saul: A Shadow of the Messiah
Samuel pours oil over Saul’s head and kisses him, declaring him ruler over God’s inheritance (1 Samuel 10:1).
This act is deeply prophetic.
The word “anointed” in Hebrew is Mashiach—Messiah.
👉 Saul is an earthly shadow
👉 Jesus is the eternal fulfillment
Just as Saul was chosen and set apart, Jesus Christ is the true Anointed One, chosen before the foundation of the world (1 Peter 1:20).
But here’s the contrast:
- Saul was chosen to lead temporarily
- Jesus was sent to reign forever
The Signs Confirming God’s Word
Samuel gives Saul three prophetic signs (1 Samuel 10:2–7):
- Donkeys found – What was lost is restored
- Provision of bread – Supernatural provision
- Encounter with prophets – Transformation by the Spirit
These are not random—they reveal God’s pattern:
- Lost things being found → Jesus restores the lost (Luke 19:10)
- Bread given → Jesus is the Bread of Life (John 6:35)
- Spirit encounter → Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11)
The Spirit Comes Upon Saul… A Glimpse of Pentecost
In verse 6, Samuel declares:
“The Spirit of the Lord will come upon you… and you will be changed into another man.”
This is powerful.
Saul begins to prophesy, astonishing those around him.
This moment echoes forward to:
- Acts 2 (Pentecost) → The Spirit transforms believers
- 2 Corinthians 5:17 → “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation”
👉 Saul’s transformation is temporary
👉 The transformation through Jesus is eternal
This shows a key truth:
Without the Spirit, kings fail.
With the Spirit, God’s kingdom advances.
Saul Hides… While Jesus Steps Forward
When it’s time to publicly appoint the king, Saul is found hiding among the baggage (1 Samuel 10:22).
This is revealing.
- Saul begins his kingship in fear and insecurity
- Jesus begins His ministry with authority and obedience
Where Saul hides, Jesus steps forward boldly:
- Saul: hiding from responsibility
- Jesus: embracing the cross
This contrast exposes the deeper message:
👉 Israel got the king they asked for
👉 God sent the King they truly needed
Chosen by Lot… But Sovereignty Belongs to God
Saul is selected by casting lots (1 Samuel 10:20–21), a method used to reveal God’s will.
This points forward to:
- Acts 1:26, where Matthias is chosen
- The truth that God is always in control, even when it seems random
But ultimately, no system, method, or tradition replaces this truth:
Jesus is not chosen by chance—He is chosen by divine decree.
A Divided Response: The Same Reaction to Jesus
At the end of the chapter:
- Some honor Saul
- Others despise him
This is the exact response Jesus received:
- Some worshipped Him as Lord
- Others rejected Him completely (John 1:11)
Nothing has changed.
Every heart must decide:
Will you honor the King… or reject Him?
The Deeper Message of 1 Samuel 10
This chapter is not just history—it’s prophecy in motion.
Saul represents the best of human leadership… yet still falls short.
Jesus represents perfect kingship:
- Anointed by God
- Empowered by the Spirit
- Obedient to the Father
- Eternal in reign
Final Reflection (3-Minute Read Closing)
1 Samuel 10 invites you to look beyond Saul and see Jesus Christ.
Because here’s the truth:
We often choose “Sauls” in our lives—
things that look good, feel right, and seem strong…
But God offers something greater:
👉 Jesus, the true King
👉 The One who doesn’t hide
👉 The One who doesn’t fail
👉 The One who reigns forever
Saul was anointed with oil…
Jesus was anointed with the Spirit—and crowned with glory.
Call to Action
If this opened your eyes to see Christ in the Old Testament, don’t stop here.
👉 Go back and explore how God was revealing Jesus all along in:
- 1 Samuel 8 – The rejection of God as King
- 1 Samuel 9 – God’s sovereign guidance
And ask yourself:
Are you following a temporary king… or the eternal King, Jesus Christ?
